Recent NSPCC data show that in the three months April to June 2020 there were more than 22,000 contacts to the NSPCC helpline from adults with concerns for the wellbeingof a child an increase of 32% on the previous 3 monthly average. Main concerns have been about parental behaviour, physical and emotional abuse and neglect. Two in five of the contacts were referred on to local authorities or the police for further action, which is also a slight increase on pre-lockdown levels. The NSPCC says that these figures back up the findings of its recently released research report which highlighted how increasing parental and family stress; reductions in protective services and intensification of pressures on children's emotional wellbeing caused by lockdown increase the risk of abuse and neglect. The NSPCC is calling for the government to commit to a children's recovery plan.
